In the context of emergency preparedness, a capacity building workshop on Minimum Emergency for Sexual and Reproductive Health in Crisis (MISP) was held from 05 to 07 November 2018

This training session was organized by the General Departement of Health and UNFPA Tunisia CO, with a view to capacity building of potential stakeholders in case of crisis and the integration of Sexual and Reproductive Health and the fight against violence against women and children girls in the management of emergencies. It covered the regions of Medenine and Tataouine, both located near the Libyan boarders and mainly concerned by the flow of people fleeing Libya in a crisis. Under the Joint Maternal and Newborn Health Program, supported by UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF and UNAIDS, and led by the primary Health Care Department (Ministry of Health), a new maternal and newborn health strategy (MNHS) covering the period 2019-2023, was validated during a national workshop held in October 2018, bringing together governmental, non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies in Tunisia.

This new strategy focuses on reducing maternal mortality from 44.8 / 100,000 in 2008 to 22.8 / 100,000 in 2023 and neonatal mortality from 12/1000 in 2012 to 6.6 / 1000 in 2023.

The strategy is based on the following six strategic axis :

  • Improve women's and newborns' access to MNHS along a continuum of care
  • Strengthen the quality of care services of MNHS
  • Strengthen governance and accountability
  • Integrating social determinants of health for MNHS care services and multisectoral collaboration
  • Develop community participation and social mobilization to promote favorable MNHS behaviors
  • Improve monitoring data for decision making and accountability.

UNFPA also supported the Department of Primary Health Care in conducting a reflection for the contextualization of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 3 in relation to the MNH by 2030, taking into account the reality and capacities of Tunisia as well as the new strategy.
